GLL's Better leisure facilities see over 128,000 customers get active on National Fitness Day
Better leisure facilities – provided by the UK’s largest charitable social enterprise leisure operator GLL – supported National Fitness Day 2024 with 100s of free classes and activities to activate local communities.
128,523 people attended Better's 240+ leisure facilities on the day and 4,300 free 1 day memberships were issued.
This year’s theme - Your Health is Your Life - aimed to encourage people of all backgrounds to recognise and celebrate the benefits physical activity can have on their physical, mental and social wellbeing.
The annual campaign, co-ordinated by leisure sector body ukactive, and held on 18 September, sees millions of people across communities inspired to be more active, with thousands of free activities hosted by gyms, swimming pools, leisure centres, sports clubs, workplaces, schools and online providers.
The event has gained importance in 2024 with the day being promoted by DCMS, NHS, Sport England, ukactive and operators.
Popular activities at Better centres included swimming, gym and fitness classes. Customers were also provided with free health checks and workshops in a number of locations.
In addition, ukactive Ambassador and Olympian Greg Whyte took part in National Fitness Day Webinar with Olympian Swimmer Keri-Anne Payne - hosted by Better.
GLL CEO Peter Bundey said: “One of GLL's core values is 'Tackling Health Inequalities' - as the largest public operator in our sector, we know the collective difference we can make to the nation's health and wellbeing when we get more people more active.
"So we were keen to support ukactive's National Fitness Day Campaign in our centres across England, Wales and Northern Ireland with 100s of free activities for everyone.
“Encouraging individuals and communities to take small steps now can have huge benefits throughout their lifetimes."
Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “ukactive members are the driving force behind National Fitness Day, hosting thousands of free events to reach even more people and help spread the message around the importance of lifelong physical activity.
“It’s brilliant to see the wide range of coverage and events that the GLL team have hosted on and around National Fitness Day this year, helping to encourage people from all communities to get involved on the day, and beyond.”
