Award winning leisure industry training scheme relaunches

Charitable social enterprise and leisure operator GLL has relaunched its award winning Trainee Manager Scheme following a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2-year scheme is a fast track way of progressing to an assistant manager position and aims to produce leisure centre and senior managers of the future. During the scheme trainee managers will take part in GLL’s management development programme, mentored by senior colleagues and able to gain a number of key industry qualifications including:

  • Gym Instructors Level 2
  • RLSS National Pool Lifeguard
  • STA Award in Teaching Swimming

Trainee managers are offered hands-on experience across a wide range of operational duties, designed to provide understanding and experience of the different roles within a leisure environment.  These range from lifeguarding, fitness instructing and front of house to working within a business support function such as Human Resources or Marketing.

External applicants for the scheme should have a degree or equivalent qualification, while this is not always necessary for internal candidates with solid industry experience. There is an opportunity for internal candidates to study for degree level qualifications at the end of the scheme.   Starting salaries range from £21,950 - £27,787 depending on location.

Lorraine Patrinos, Learning & Organisational Development Director at GLL said: “We’re delighted to be relaunching our flagship training scheme, which is a gateway to a multitude of career and development opportunities within the leisure industry.  We will begin the candidate selection process this Spring, with successful applicants then starting the programme during August and September 2022.

Previous alumni from the scheme include Jamie Coleshill, part of the 2004 intake and now a Regional Director for GLL.  Jamie comments: “The Trainee Manager Scheme gave me industry insight and a wide range of opportunities to learn within different leisure environments.  Thanks to GLL’s approach to people development, I have had the chance to succeed, while the opportunities for learning and development are fantastic.”
